While I don’t often go out to capture sunsets, sometimes they do find me. This was one of them. I was working with the business association in Galena on a fundraising event and they wanted a few photos of the view of Georgetown Harbor on the Sassafras River. After the planning meeting I went to take a few photos and this was one.
October begins Oyster Season on the Chesapeake. And many celebrate it by attending an OysterFest where the oyster shells are collected to be recycled to help rebuild oyster reefs.
The Town of Rock Hall in Kent County, MD is a small town on the Chesapeake Bay. For much of its history it has been a town full of those who made a living on the water. It still is, but the watermen way of life has faded and many docks are full of sailboats instead of work boats.
There is a small beach that is enjoyed by many as a quiet peaceful place to sit and enjoy the sight of the Chesapeake.
This photo is available as a Note/Greeting Card.
Weather can often change what is usually a beautiful, comforting location. Betterton Beach is one of those beautiful comforting places. Especially in the middle of summer.
This photo shows how a storm can make a big difference. Early March 2018 saw a North Easter come up the coast of the Atlantic. The Delmarva saw lots of rains, but also very strong winds that blew driftwood, logs and other garbage onto the beach.
There are plenty of hayfields throughout the region. Most are turned into large round bails. As was this one. Every once in a while you will find one where the bails are wrapped in white plastic making them look like large marshmallow.
The Queen Anne’s County Court House in Centreville, MD is the oldest court house still in use in the United State. But not for much longer since a new modern one is being built a nearby.
The Court House was featured in a Video that was shown just before the Super Bowl LI. This photo of the court house was shot in the spring of 2016, a few month before the footage used in the video was shot.
Living in Chestertown allows me to take walks at Wilmer Park. On the path there are many places where you can stop, sit and enjoy the view. And the view is beautiful, even in the middle of Winter.
This Photo is January Photo for the 2019 Delmarva Scenes Calendar
Delmarva Scenes my photographic project to photograph the Usual, Unusual, Beautiful and not so pretty scenes on the Delmarva Peninsula. The Delmarva Peninsula is the State of Delaware and the Eastern Shore Counties of Maryland, and Virginia. For those who may not know much about the peninsula you can read about it at DelmarvaUSA.com.
The project began over 5 years ago and during those years I have taken thousands of photographs. Some have been offered as Fine Art Prints, others in Calendars and Cards. Some have found their way to all three.
With the end of the year coming, along with the Holiday Seasons and the online store opening with New 2019 Calendars and Note/Greeting Cards for sale, I have decided to post a new photograph each day from now until the New Year. And perhaps beyond.
Along with the photograph I will tell the story of how it came about.

The photograph that I used for the Delmarva Scenes Advertising Card came from a larger photo taken at Chesapeake City, MD and the C&D Canal. This is the basin behind the Army Corps of Engineers.

Photographs by SG Atkinson of the Usual, Unusual, Beautiful and not so pretty scenes of the Delmarva Peninsula
As the summer of 2015 began, I began this project of photographing the Delmarva Peninsula. Since then I have taken many photographs. But the project is far from over.
There are many places I haven’t been where I am sure I will find hold many scenes that should be, need to be and will be photographed
In the weeks and months to come I will continue to work to add Delmarva Scenes to my collection of Note and Greeting Cards and prints.
I also hope to have available soon a Post Card series.
And one day a Photo Coffee Table type Book with plenty of Delmarva Scenes.
